Is being an independent scientist in any way feasible nowadays? What would be the challenges and downsides?

I don't think so. There's so much equipment needed that it would be impossible to afford it all/build it all yourself.

Professional or hobbyist, for income or interest? Interest/hobby is easy. Pro/income is harder, you'd obviously struggle to compete against research teams in quantity and without colleagues also quality of work. Nothing stopping you in principle.

Not him but I also scoffed at the first clause but then I read the second one. He presents a fair point about technological improvements vs. low-hanging fruit. But either way I don't care since I do math and I only need pen, paper, and computer.

What would happen to physics, if one day a paper or a book appears, which would basically BTFO anything that could even remotely be called "pure mathematics", and would basically do to mathematics as a whole much the same thing Hume once did to philosophy, leaving no stone unturned? Happened three times in the history of mathematics on lesser scale, led to major paradigmatic changes in mathematics as a whole. I am however talking about the kind of catastrophic event for which it would prove impossible to devise a paradigmatic shift to fully circumvent it.

I'd say time and focus is the real limiting factor here.

Most math can be done without any expensive equipment, there there are only few non academic mathematicians, because they are simply unable to invest the time of keeping up with their field of research, while doing your own.

Similar things hold true for experimental sciences, although you are more limited in your field of research. I don't think setting up your own biology/chemistry or even physics lab would be much more expensive than having a moderately expensive hobby.

But still, having the equipment doesn't help if you simply cannot put in the required work of 40+ hours a week.

Depends on the field if you're working in biology then it's entirely possible to be independent especially in anything related to breeding and heredity and some of the equipment depending on what you want to do can be fairly cheap comparably

The mathematician might have an abstract idea of a solution that can certainly be btfo in some sense but the engineer has one that can never be btfo, so it could never be the kind of earthshaking paradigm change you are thinking of.

yes, there are lots of them they are called INVENTORS. If you are serious about being an independent scientist you need to spend lots of time learning about the patent system and push your ideas forward through there.
