This. For academia you can go to a shit school, get a 4.0 + research and get into an Ivy/Public Ivy for grad school, but someone with a lower GPA + research from an Ivy/Public Ivy will likely be considered first.

Going straight into industry? Then yes, going to a kickass school and getting a lower GPA > unknown school with a 4.0.

Op here, this is literally why my gpa has been tanking lol. I just changed my schedule for fall, it’s gonna push me a semester back but idc I’m tired I have been slamming upper divisions and labs together back to back semesters. I’m taking 12 credits in the fall, 1 lab

Don't worry. If you graduate with a 3.5 GPA in STEM, you are golden, unless you want to get into an ivy league grad school. In that case, even a perfect 4.0 may not be enough.

Prestige only matters with law school. Just stay focused and avoid procrastinating. Work with groups, and TAs before you submit assignments. Go to office hours every week. Fight for every point.

yup, doing research with a top notch professor rn and work a student job in our department and they would vouch for me. I know gpa is just a number but man I know mine could’ve been higher if I picked my schedule better and picked the “easier” Professor instead of being righteous and picking the harder one to be challenged and learn more but w.e I’ll just work at McDonald’s for the rest of life Idc

I followed my own advice, but not consistently at all. Sometimes I just went "fuck it". Don't do that. I stopped doing it in senior year. Kind of like reverse senioritis.

3.44 GPA here and I got into grad school. Not my first choice school, but that's because I didn't have a subject GRE. Also, I already have 12 graduate level credits behind me.

GPA is not a meme for academia. As you said, your GPA matters for a STEM job, but STEM jobs are by definition academia-related, industry cannot really be called STEM. Excel and code-monkeying isn't really STEM
