Imagine you basically have a vr headset that temporarily glues to your face, then displays patterns that after some time you learn to become part of. Eventually you see things in them and they correlate with the cables plugged into your skull. First you are just interacting with known concepts but in a new wiring, visual data is fed in, but in an encoded form which includes the API that will be used to interact with your consciousness.
Once you are able to see and control the virtual demo, it gradually includes more complex elements, beginning to expose you to small neural networks which are also actively adapting to work with you. Todays backprop tech is enough for this probably, but by the time this happens it will be far more advanced. After some time you begin to experience your consciousness as being part of these networks which are physically seperate, but data wise are now part of the same graph as the rest of your existing mind. Rapid removal of the vr headset at this point may be similar to brain damage. The brain may have offloaded existing knowledge and functions to the artificial neural nets, as they are now effectively one whole circuit.
Maybe routine removal of the headset and sessions of plain reality time could allow for an ability to switch between normal and expanded consciousness, but it already sounds like a difficult task so idk
