Not really. It can contribute to metabolic syndrome, less than refined sugar, but aspartame and other FDA approved artificial sweetners won't turn into major carcinogens/toxins and poison you.

I don't know, but I do know that whenever I drink diet Pepsi or diet Coke I get this horrible taste in my mouth and a bad headache, same with saccharine, so I just avoid anything that has aspartame or saccharine listed in its ingredients list.

My guess: it causes some amount on neurological damage that precipitates the cognitive decline associated with aging. Aspartame, and many other food additives, are probably mildly neurotoxic and in the long term cause noticeable damage. Couple this damage with the decay caused by Alzheimer's and you will see an compounded effect. Essentially the Alzheimer's decline will happen quicker and therefore sooner. However, diet soda is one of probably a thousand things in our environment that could do this, so its not clear how bad it is to drink the stuff.
