No, by a definition a PhD cannot be awarded if the candidate did not make a unique contribution to the field. The kind of data gathering research that leads to trivial expansions of knowledge is masters level or in an MD's case fellowship level work.

Yes, but the "contribution" is usually so utterly obscure and trivial that it makes no difference whatsoever. There's a glut of PhD candidates and most aren't smart or lucky enough to do anything significant.

It's idiotic to compare MDs to PhDs. The purpose is entirely different. Clinical practice is why we have doctors. Some doctors do research, and many of them have PhDs, but research is not why people go to med school.

You shouldn't let an MD anywhere close to a research task, just as much as you shouldn't get a diagnosis from your biology professor.
