and schizophrenia is a whole group of mental illness that is yet to be classified. There may be a scale of severity of a particular expression of schizophrenia, but if you have a mental illness it's about as likely to be considered schizophrenia as it is manic depression or dissociative identity disorder. Symtoms don't correlate directly to mental states and also different symtoms show at different times.
Basically theres science on mental illness but don't consider any of it too meaningful until we can just shove someone in an fMRI and identify it from there. As long as its based on observing behavior or asking patient questions, nobody knows much more than "damn, patient seems fucked" or "patient seems normal"
