Biological assimilator would be more dangerous, and cancer, whether it’s an assimilator or not, is a good example. When you fight something that’s mostly you, you have no way of specifically chemically targeting that organism and not humans in general. E.g. a fungicide kills fingal cells but does nothing to humans because they lack the molecular machines which it targets, a tumor on the other hand contains all of the same machines as healthy cells, just in different proportions. A mechanical assimilator you could probably fight by increasing the electric field in the air to fry any nearby electronics. No electronics isn’t fun, but it’s better than dying of a plague.

It depends if the machines have an overiding entity that controls them, as if one machine was a finger rather than an individual. In this case it would be resource management which would be very efficient. Also the level of technology the machine has can determine how hard it is to destroy.

Mechanical assimilators are not real, or atleast don't exist yet however the looming threat is there with possibly shrinking swarm computers and micro assembling parts. The looming threat is few decades far off and based upon the idea that biological beings may not be able to counter a robust mechanical nanobot.

There's also artificial biological assimilators. As in converting a virus/bacteria to work in certain manner through human design. Lab testings are already being done for these shits. Vaccines are primitive form, but they mainly function as weak cells for the body to learn how to defend against. However the lab tests is an active agent that actively targets malignant tumors/cancer/etc.
