Back in the good old days, there were really only two institutions that could afford to actually build a university and sustain it: the church and the crown. No one else, not even nobles (or groups of nobles) could realistically afford it without spending so much capital that they would put their own positions at risk. So the church and the crown it was.
Now, whoever owns it will run it for its own benefit. But back in those days, the church and the crown didn't really care about anything other than perpetuating their own positions of privilege in society. So the church would worry about cranking out as many great artists, not because they loved art, but because when dumb peasant monkeys look at a big cathedral or a beautiful painting they immediately feel how superior and powerful THE CHURCH is compared to them. Their daily life is filled with pain and suffering, and then suddenly they see a great work of art and it's like God himself came down to show you beauty. The same goes for the crown really.
But nowadays that is gone. We live in a world where a single individual has 100 billion dollars, and a roastie gets 30 billions just for roasting it about and divorcing him. So now these people build, run and own the universities. They are the big donors, they are the one making the big calls. And who are they? Mainly capitalists, of course. The owners of industry. And what do the owners of industry want? WORKERS. They need MORE WORKERS. More workers to lower the wages of their own workers. More workers to replace their current aging workers. More workers to work work work and work and work today but also work tomorrow, work yesterday if possible, work forever. So that's what we get, really.
You can survive of course. I went for a good boy autism degree, pure mathematics, but guess what? I now work at a bank so they got me too. Nothing I can do about that.
