Online courses are better since they're interactive and the picture is moving and there's questions and shit to solve in a more hands on way.
But textbooks are comfy. You can sit and do questions in a boring environment. Makes you feel like scientists did 200 years ago. Easier to sleep during or after it.
Moocs and YouTube videos are superior to just textbooks though for self learning.

As long as it gets you thinking about the topic then whatever works. Honest interest is the only important part. Do online courses or exercises, or write your own code, anything as long as its fun.

Some books are really well written though, they are often the best resource but only when you realize that even simple stuff like the choice of words or the footnotes/exercises are all there for a reason. This is especially true with math books

My Learning strategy involves spaced repetition. For the uninitiated, It means repeating stuff you learn again and again over a long period of time.
Anki/supermemo is a program which optimises the intervals at which the knowledge is repeated.
Here some guy used this method to get better at programming. I wager this can be used with mathematics too

regarding the question in the OP, I cant say much. both have their benefits. Online courses can be used to lay a foundation and textbooks for deeper learning

I think some computer related stuff feels better learnt from online courses than textbooks. Stuff like learning statistics techniques while using R etc
