>>10877649Nihilism isn't a good belief—it's unstable.
That is, if you continue to think about it applied to reality over time, it changes or causes a contradiction which will result in you enjoying your life less.
Nietzsche solved this instability by using Nihilism as a starting-point to jump into the idea of creating your own value system.
Nihilism wipes the board clean - a new intention fills it back in.
He gets deeper by talking about what metrics you should base your value system off of.
You should actually read the philosophies around Nihilism they're really good. Nietzsche; check him out.
BACK ON TOPIC
I look at religion from multiple perspectives—there is the role it plays in an individual life, the local society (family?), the larger society (town? country), and humanity over time.
I've found it has different strengths and weaknesses in each scope.
For my own self, I actually get pretty depressed understanding the reality of things and ultimate fate of the universe and fate of ourselves as we know it; mathematical unlikeliness of anything else. Science is very precise with its data and once you truly understand it you just can't lie to yourself anymore. It is in the math.
And in that state, sometimes it's nice to take my value system and anthropomorphize, repeat a set a rituals which help me handle the existential dread, and use the time to try making myself a little better and mentally healthy.
This isn't theism but is it religion? A godless religion?
