Most of what you learn in school is the most real-life applicable language that describes a complex pattern, not actually the real juicy stuff of math—numbers and arithmetic, algebra and calculus are just languages describing the surface of a much richer world.
In math you'll learn how to take any complexity and model new ways of thinking. The early courses give you your first introduction to one way mathematics uses symbols to represent the deeper concepts - and you'll eventually see the deeper concepts by practicing the coursework and looking for the patterns.
But gradeschool will first teach you the mechanics of how to manipulate a handful of mathematical languages - those languages are really good the stuff of typical life.
And in a way the typical person gets screwed!
You're made to just memorize transformations and you have no idea why or how they work, you just learn the language. I don't like this way of learning but it's what we have right now.
Eventually you go beyond this in coursework but to get there early you have to put in extra study and do research on your own.
To get better at the mechanics unfortunately you just have to fucking do them over and over because School Districts thought it was a good idea to take the end results of distilling complex concepts and structures down to their purest symbolic form and give then give those results directly to students with maybe 20 minutes on how the the results can be made more useful.
And in that most distilled form you just have to memorize shit because you don't have the structure (read:bread crumbs) to follow to fully understand it.
Go looking for resources online or talk to your teachers. Shit, copy paste this post to them.
Use more letters and arrows. It's never too early to introduce category theory.
