The question then becomes is it possible for the simulation to interact with your current timeline.

I don't think time travel is going to be as straightforward as breaking Einsteins theory. I think it will result from a series of creative exploitations of rules and processes which cumulatively bend the laws of physics.

Oh yes. The second judgement is coming. What do you think we are going to use the first dyson sphere for?

It's not possible to go back. Based on everything we know about physics time only flows in the forward direction. It's easy to say "oh, well, we could discover some new physics thing in the future that would allow it", but if that's the reasoning then it's not ever worth asking a question of "is this possible".

Ignorant whelp. Suppose you had the data to simulate the motion of every single body in the obsevable universe in real time.

You can make this simulation run backwards and infer what would have occured in the past. You could even extract the consciousness of people who had once lived using this simulation.

Hard? Yes. Hence the mention of a dyson sphere. We're hundreds if not thousands of years away from developing this technology.

Impossible? You lack imagination.

Yes. We would have to leave the solar system. There are ways of using fields to harvest energy. The entire star need not be completely shrouded physically.

Assume that space-time is defined within a series of actions as opposed to a progression of something fourth dimensional. This quasi-third dimensional field can then be manipulated to return matter to a previously defined state. It's the same as the concept of simulating the past.
Under the assumption that it is physically impossible to travel to the past in any way, mostly because any participation in its events creates unrectifiable paradoxes (this includes just bouncing photons in different directions), you can still decode non-interfering aspects of universal information to try and simulate shit that has already happened from what is basically an outside perspective.

The necessary technology to do this is pretty far in excess of what we can currently imagine, so I doubt it'd happen any time soon.

This keeps me up at night. We could be stuck in a groundhogs day loop that repeats on a 24 hour cycle, but moves forward 1 hour each cycle. Time would progress. Nobody would be the wiser. We'd NEVER KNOW!

Seriously, there's got to be a way to test for this.

If time can be locally reversed in a given area, then you could leave a note as the space around you will not be affected. It would only work much like the ghosting technique for AI. If your brain knows it will be scanned and has 'accepted that fact, it will be scanned and enjoy its new life as a digitized form. If there is such a thing as meta-time, it's trivial. I've mentioned the idea a few times but imagine the relationship between yourself and a video game or movie, it's trivially easy to rewind the film, and in the game even go back and make different choices. If your characters were conscious they'd be blissfully unaware as their memories would be altered.

This of course presumes there's such a thing as meta-time and something outside of ordinary time. So if we're in a simulation for instance, or there's some kind of deity, it would be able to reverse time with little trouble.

Time travel isnt real because time is not real its a concept we created to describe the movement of objects through space, yes we can "move foward in time" but only based on the reality of slowing down our subjective time frame in refrence to everyone elses via gravity. You essentially slow down your particles and everyone elses remain the same so you "travel to the future". Doing the reverse just doesnt work out logically you cant reverse this process. This understand is what divides the brainlets from the brains.
