Same here. I had the grades to get into the top-1 in my country, but was afraid of dropping out, and went for a top-5. After that, went for a PhD to a top-40 in the US, while I could just wait, prepare for a couple more years and get a much better deal.
I keep telling myself that I had good friends and fun in my undergrad, that my current advisor is nice, but all this is just a cope. Now my choices are to either be a silicon valley code monkey, a junior faculty in a middle of nowhere state school, or to go back to my country and lose previous 6 years.

Honestly I looked at the mathematics test and I think I would've been able to get in.

I just got into the ""top"" CS program in my country but it is not close. It is from the royal institute of technology which no one has heard of outside my country. I will be starting in two days fuck.

I'm considering starting a second bachelor's in mathematics in parallel to stand out but do you guys think it is enough for CS PhD admissions for top schools?

This is not a double major but two separate degrees from different unis.

If you want to succeed you need to be able to apply bursts of large effort, what else will show academic ability? Take math courses locally if you can, call your local community college and ask, then write a really good thesis about the class you took. If you show strong interest in a subject area the resume reader will pass it off to a more specialized reader who knows about the topic, and see that you're ahead of your peers. It's the same as jobs. You're trying to prove you'll be a good student who will succeed naturally and through effort. Do your best, it gets harder as you age and this is your last year to apply for a bachelor's without it seeming out of place

The reason why I think this is possible is because you can't apply to two separate bachelor's at the same time in Sweden and it is expected that you take a Msc.

So it would go something like this:
2019-2022: Bsc. CS
2022-2024: Msc. CS
2020-2023: Bsc. Mathematics

The CS programme is 5 year so msc. Admissions is automatic. By doing this I have a lot of time during 2019 and 2024. I have already a lot of ideas for projects I've wanted to do for several months.

Signals have to be short. A thesis is several hundred pages. "I graduated from Harvard" is a single sentence, much better. Better yet : putting "Harvard" on a CV (a single word).

Fredrik Lundberg is a billionaire who has done this too and I think it is extremely overrepresented at McKinsey and BCG as well as some law firms in Sweden.

You can't double major here, otherwise I would double major in math and CS but that is not an option.

But the name that is associated with you IS pretty much set in stone. And it will be beneficial for you if that name stands out. All other things being equal, it is almost always an objectively better choice to go for the top unis. If one could have done this (btw, even if you do have the grades so do most of the applicants so it is not a certainty) and didn't, then it was probably not the best choice they could have made.

Adding shit like "but of course we must consider each case individually and remember that there is much more to a person than just the name of their institution and many other choices and opportunities will have a greater impact on your life" etc. etc. etc. just to stop people's feelings from being hurt each time dilutes the argument and makes everything unnecessarily vague, even if it is true and something that sane people should know.

The £9k/year fees are no joke, and the loans they give with annural interest rates of like 6% are a complete ripoff assuming you ever want to be cleared of them. You can look at the average earnings of UK graduates across all sectors and see that they are quite low and do not at all compensate for the massive debt. Further, cost of living is actually very high in many parts of the country, especially where the jobs are.

And I probably don't need to mention Brexit.

The UK is a really stupid country in so many respects and they've spent the last decade trying to make it as unattractive for young EU people to study in as possible.

I am in a grad school in a top-40 US university right now, and there is a big difference with good places.
All my other PhD applications were rejected. In my undergrad they had trouble giving me a transcript in English, because they rarely do it, and noone knows how it's supposed to look like. Not to mention references from no name professors, who don't even know English, so I had to write them for myself.

Going to add as well I wasn't rejected anywhere just didn't have the confidence to apply. I saw on this site called whatdotheyknow over half the people with 3A* got accepted for ox physics, and obviously loads of the rejects would have had private schools, tutoring, been rejected first time round etc

Not as much as it used to, but still, having hailed from X/HEC especially, but also ENS and household name engineering schools like Centrale/Mines/Ponts/Agro is a very real leg up in your career.

If you're interested you should apply anyway.

Also depending on many factors you may be able to drastically reduce the debt you accumulate in the UK. Grants/bursaries/whatever from your own country may be more abundant than you think (especially for a talented young fellow going to an elite institution abroad) and if you're poor you may be able to get some from the UK unis.

Your university matters, but not as much as people on this board and QS Jews want you to believe and it's definitely not everything. There are plenty of Stanford/Oxbridge etc. postgrads who struggle to find employment. Entering the economy isn't easy in general.
