Because they study every game that they have, some in more detail than others. If it was an interesting game then it sticks out. A lot of athletes are like this. Pretty sure Iker Casillas (ex-spain and real madrid goalkeeper) can tell you the result of any game he's played in in a lot kf detail.

Maybe that game was massively noteworthy to him. What he said doesn't suggest he remembers all games from all time, although some people can do this like that NFL coach they interviewed who knew every play from a bunch of games from many years previous

The better you get at chess, the more you abstract a board position into its strategic ideas. He doesn't so much have a photographic memory of the location of each individual piece: instead, he remembers the offensive and defensive ideas on the board, and can reconstruct the piece positions based on that.

My peak is basically around 1900 FIDE and I can only wish I could get to 2500+

I think you have to be naturally intelligent to get to that point. I think a brainlet like me could only ever really make it up to maybe 2100-2200 and that's really with a lot of practice and luck

I'm not sure what your talking about, but I remember literally everything. I can't rattle off a specific date to attach to my memories right off the bat, but I can reference other memories to get a pretty good target of the month and year. I never took pictures because my memory is good enough that I can remember the moment forever. Memory palace is legit for sure.
