Demand is fairly limited for the current technology level. It is meaningful science however the rockets are insufficient to reach orbit. Within a decade or so we should see scramjet like engines coming out and this branch of the tech tree will become the primary method of moving human passengers into orbit.
Materials science is the problem aparently. Nobody can currently build a suitable compressor or something.
