In fact, any "alternative" program to SLS will just end up like SLS because Congress isn't really interested in space other than what jobs it makes, and NASA has some limp wristed management that allows laziness and coorruption.
It's not like NASA said one day, "hmm, a project that'll deliver people to the moon soon and on budget, or a project that does the same but will be horrifically delayed and overbudget...the second one it is! #yolo!" The string of decisions that lead to the SLS are due to some deep issues in American spaceflight.
