A simple radio has a few parts:
>speaker/microphone
>oscillator
>mixer/modulator
>cable
>antenna
Each of these parts has some kind of interesting science behind it. But the gist of it is:
TRANSMITTER
>generate a high-frequency electrical wave in the oscillator
>mix this wave with input from the microphone
>send the new, mixed wave through the cable to the antenna
>the antenna "vibrates" to emit a matching radio wave
RECEIVER
>antenna picks up the radio wave, causing it to "vibrate" electrically
>wave is sent through the cable to the amplifier
>amplified wave is decoded back into the input, again using an oscillator and a kind of mixer
>amplify again and output as sound
