Looking for a complete and rigorous treatment of high school math for someone who wants to (in the future with more work) understand proofs on the level of upper level undergrad courses / IMO problems

Is Steward's Precalculus a good substitute for Lang's Basic Mathematics? I like that book style.

This is a good supplement to Lang since the book is rather dry and difficult at times. He has a video now for about every chapter of the book i think.

Both are ancient, shit memes. Lang is underwhelming. Gelfand is overkill.

Go for Sheldon Axler’s precalculus if you want a good hardcover textbook. If you want free, get Axler from libgen or read the free online precalculus textbook by Stitz-Zeager. If you struggle because of inexperience and a lack of endurance, use Khan Academy as a failsafe in the beginning. Make sure you to wean yourself off of that though by the time you’re finished—if you can’t, then math isn’t for you.

Also I forgot to mention that Velleman is good to read to build on your proofing skills. You should work on that too, since high school math, for the most part (some exercises in Axler are good practice) is nothing close to what most of a solid math undergrad program will be like.

you don't need 4 Russian textbooks. what you need is something that will drill you on all of the high school algebraic manipulations you'll need to do well in Calc I-III as well as get you thinking mathematically. a good precalc textbook, like Axler (who also wrote an even better linear algebra textbook) is all you need.

Nobody needs to read Gelfand to do that. I would still go with Axler and then start doing competition/Olympiad problems. How to Solve It, The Art and Craft of Problem Solving, etc. would be my next choice. Then I would do nothing but solve IMO/Putnam/etc. problems until I'm competitive or realize I can't do it. But don't think that any booklist will be sufficient to compete at the Olympiad level.
