A really great opportunity came my way and I accepted a full-time job that I will have to do while I also finish the last semester of my math degree. Does anyone have any experience of working full time while studying? Before I had only worked half time. What can I expect?

I don't need advice from art majors with no real responsibilities. STEM is a different game.

It's a full load of math classes. They include differential geometry, two applied math courses and two general history courses. This last semester is known for being a bit softer which is why there is only one real math class (diffgeo) so I have that going for me.

I think I can endure a semester, but this will imply I'll be working 13 hours a day. I'm sure this will have some side effects eventually.

I did it my freshman year. I'm a junior now. I was working full time, taking freshman 2nd sem chemistry, molecular genetics (junior level course), and molecular biology (junior level). Each had a lab too, so I was out m-f from 7 am to 10pm. Its tough but itll make you stronger

Closest to insanity is when I went full NPC mode. I became a drone, no time to think, only do work. It was the sharpest I had ever been in my life, I was so quick mentally. It's just 3 months and I don't know your long-term goals. Is grad school a goal of yours? Grades don't matter after you land your first position in your field.

Yes, I also plan on getting my masters degree in math while also working full time. I then intend on a Ph.D. but for that I would have to stop working.

I was part-time before but this new job is a once in a lifetime opportunity. People with masters degrees would kill to have this job. I feel like if I let it go, I am slashing my future net worth by half. And no, there is no opportunity of doing this job part time because it is a critical position.

No, honestly I have no logical reason for this but I would hate not to graduate now. I just want to continue with my masters and PhD as soon as possible.

Since you'll be only in college for one more semester, I think you can take it. It will still be tough, but you might make through it without going nuts if you can take some good amount of stress

Thanks /sci/frens. It helps knowing that others have done this and survived, as I asume you can't use 4chan from the insane asylum. I guess I'll just ask for any tips to deal with it? I will do anything except for alcohol/drugs.

What you should expect is to shoot your social life in the head and bury it in the back yard (this includes your gaming time and 4chan fuck-about-time) You won't have time for it where your going. Schedule out your days hourly. You should be able to give your studies 1 to 5 hours every night during the week depending on what you need. Take off every exam day from work preemptively as a sick day. Also protect your sleep and saturdays at all costs. If you get sleep deprived you will not be able to power through when you need it. As for saturdays try at take down time with them as they will keep you sane

My advantage is that I already have no social life other than seeing my girlfriend on weekends. No gaming and I can live without 4chan.

First 3 months you are still basically being tested, I don't think I can afford this.

During my 2nd year of my math program, I was taking 4 courses (normal load is 5) and working full time (~45 hours per week). Burnt out and dropped a couple classes when I realized I was going to fail them. Had to ration every waking hour so carefully (very little social life, no vidya or internet, very little sports/gym). It really forced me to prioritize what I wanted out of life but I couldnt do it long term. My career suffered a bit, since I couldn't put in any extra hours for work related stuff (events, work related education, networking, staying late on project crunches)

I'm currently taking 2 courses a semester with a full time job and its much more manageable.

if this truly is a once in a lifetime career opportunity, you're going to want to work at it more than a 40 hour week. Cut back on your classes so you can kill it at work. You can always graduate later. You're going to want to network like crazy and make a good impression at this job

Maybe. But I was instructed that we have very fixed work hours and that we can only do extra hours if management explicitly requests us. However, I agree. If they ever need me to stay longer then that day I'll probably ditch college.

I also don't know if this is once in a lifetime opportunity, but it is a great job that I only expected to have once I had a masters degree but somehow I lucked out and got in without even my bachelors. Can't drop that because if I manage to make this my career, I can completely ditch the idea of a masters degree in applied math and go for pure as I already have the job.
