Honestly you can get pretty far with youtube, khanacademy, edX, MIT online courses, etc. But at universities and even junior colleges you will meet people who actually want to interact with you about this stuff which is awesome. If you learn all the basics first and then go to college you may just drop out due to boredom. But most likely there are things in the courses you skipped during self-study.
It's never too late, just remember you will always be a brainlet. At a college pace you will have a brand new perspective on the field and the universe around you every week, and the picture you had last week was woefully ignorant and small. You'll learn shit you couldn't have comprehended a month ago. So whenever you stop learning you will think you are complete. Stay humble unlike the idiots on this board.
College is also a lot of work. Hopefully at 35 you have retirement plans if you are trying to fit in college. 20yos only manage to work and study with copious amounts of amphetamines, understand how your mind copes with the fatigue of another part- or full-time job of college.
