In my opinion, extreme physical pain is the worst thing a human can endure in this existence. My worst fears are basically a list of injuries I would rather die than ever go through. So, would it be possible to forever defeat pain by tackling the nervous system? Obviously, drugs exist now that can completely stop all pain, they are generally administered well after an injury has occurred, so much suffering has to be endured whilst waiting, and of course this can only ever be short term. Also, pain is necessary to know when injuries or sicknesses are present, but perhaps it would be possible in the future to install some kind of diagnostic device in humans to constantly monitor and report any such problems. Does that tech exist today in any form that we could adapt?
In epicurean philosophy, the greatest pleasure one can experience is not direct, but the avoidance of pain, and things that cause us hurt. I agree with this, and I think a goal of humanity should be to eradicate pain from the human condition
