dy/dx if I'm also dealing with partials so I keep them clear from partials

$Df( x_{1} ,..., x_{n} )$ for the total derivative and $f_{v} (x)$ for directional derivatives. Of course $v=x_{i}$ for each of the partial derivatives.

Either one; just don't mix them up.
I have a deep loathing for $\dfrac{df}{dx}$ and $\displaystyle y'$ whenever I see them. I chalk up such notational illiteracy to general mathematical illiteracy.
