are we forgetting that due to a 200+ year culture of universal gun rights for men (the definition of men later extended to non-whites and gays), would ensure that at least half of the people ordered to confiscate firearms would be 2nd amendment sympathizers, and would likely rebel against their own government?
are we assuming that the population wouldn't realize what's happening, and form militias in the hundreds of thousands by counties, and gun down anyone who claims to be a statist sympathizer or employee of the government?
are we assuming that far worse geopolitical situations are at hand like a power-vacuum that would be filled by russia or china if america descended into a civil war - and the outright anti-democratic policies they would force on neighbouring countries and trade partners (assuming they haven't started a full scale invasion)?

It has happened before, and will happen again - and the reason why the founding fathers included it to begin with, is because they looked through all of humanities civilizations and saw just how easily the population was oppressed and outright massacred when the means to equalize self defense against aggression were confiscated
