Imho they were experimenting the same way they experiment with using fish skin

Youre ignoring the future in prosthetics, basically the more of the arm you have the easier it will be in the future to have a robotic hand.

More bone structure allows better control of future prosthetics and i imagine though i am not an expert that having more of your hand gives your brain more to work with when you have neural links.
