What's the psychology behind celebrity culture/worship? It doesn't even have to be an actor/singer/whatever - if the media says they are a celebrity now, millions will eat it up. Just why?

People worship celebrities for the same reason ancient people worshiped prolific hunter-gatherers. Emulating behavior of someone who is getting shit done efficiently increases your chances of feeding your children and propagating your blood line across the generations.

Similarly people are going full retard when it comes to cheering their favorite sports team. Its a behavior that taps into an ancient tribal adherence mechanism where you increase survival chances by strengthening tribal coherence. Us vs them type of mentality.

In short these behaviors are hereditary psychological remnants from times when it actually mattered.
