You could set up your home pc so that you can encrypt and re-route your public wifi traffic to your home pc then it will do the traffic then encrypt it and send it back to you.
This is free and useful for using public wifi securely.
You can also pay for a VPN service but you are at the mercy of whoever owns the machines that your traffic is routed to.
Spoofing mac and using someone else's wifi is probably best.
If you've already "publicly" been looking at stuff related to what you want to hide, there's a chance your "hidden" traffic could be guessed that it came from you.
