What is the evolutionary advantage of a recurring dream where you wake up, limp and nearly paralyzed, manage to force yourself out of bed. Hit the ground, usually painlessly. Feel a force all around you, you try to move but can barely crawl. You try to scream but only the most quiet muffled sounds come out.
Recently this sequence was integrated into a chain of false awakenings. The computer was on in the other room (I could see through the hall), making some noise. I get up over and over and try to make it stop. I see a car driving up my driveway. Then wake up in bed again. This happens 3 times. The 4th it's dusk and a bright orange light is coming in the windows. My mother is there. I finally get to the computer and she starts trying to convince me to leave it emitting the sound. To not turn it off. I look around and realize, I tell her it's a dream. She tries to convince me otherwise. The most uncanny thing was the sound the computer was making, and that something in the form of my mother appeared to prevent me from stopping it.
