Anyway, it's a very naive view to have, because most euros weren't considered remotely white by americans in the 1800s nor the 1900s because they weren't english. The germans, the irish, the czech, the italians, the polish, etc. were definitely not white, and this was further evidenced by their label of "new immigrant" on the census and their clear instructions not to even mark white. It was because they lobbied hard to not be associated with black people and started discriminating against them that they eventually got begrudging acceptance. The irish literally took out all the poor jobs and refused to work with black people so they could convince americans that they did "white man's work."
This idea of "white" is ridiculously relative, and if you apply your current year "hurr durr liberals are stupid and SJWs" understanding to actual, well documented, well understood history, you miss the point
