Reminder that a functional fusion reactor would make hydrocarbons cheap and carbon neutral too. Need some gasoline? Suck carbon dioxide and water back from the atmosphere and you have gasoline back at an insignificant energy expense but nothing compared with the amount of power fusion generates. Gasoline is suddenly a rechargeable battery.

ITER won't do shit. DEMO might, after ITER proved itself and IFMIF comes up with some long term resistant compound materials to make such a reactor feasible. You do realize that fusing shit isn't the problem, it's getting energy out of it without destroying the reactor over time. We still rely on heating up water and driving turbines (which will be the most efficient way of extracting this energy for a couple hundred years). This means that the heat needs to be conducted from the plasma to the water which creates a shit load of problems. We should work on next photovoltaics instead. Imagine pouring all this money into something that will actually result in free energy everywhere.

It makes energy intensive process supercheap. We can do it today, but it is too expensive to make it economically viable. With fusion, you get so much energy to spare that you can brute force your way through and care little of the expenses.

There is this Canadian outfit working on this right now, using hydropower. Carbon Engineering is their name. They have a small pilot plant up & running, and claim that the full size plant they are currently building will be able to produce synthetic fuels for about $1 USD per liter; if cheap fusion becomes a thing then that would obviously drive the price down even more. This sort of thing will be extremely handy for use cases that don't lend themselves to electrification, like long-haul aircraft.

To add to your comment, plenty of current energy importing countries would also kill to get a hold of some cheap energy producing tech. The PRC being the biggest example; right now their greatest strategic weakness is all the oil they have to import from the Middle East & Africa. Cheap fusion power + the synthetic fuels mentioned above would fix that weakness.

That of course makes wonder what sort of secret fusion research programs the Chinese do have running right now.
