If fusion is going to be able to actually compete with solar and wind, it needs to be cheap, small, and safe. Tritium is a liability. Neutrons from DT fusion are a BIG liability. Work in aneutronic fusion should be strongly encouraged, even if it is harder,because it mitigates the fuel and neutron concerns and makes the reactors far more palatable to a nuke shy public. TAE are working on proiving their FRC design with DT and then later doing the harder boron-hydrogen for mainline power production, since its neutron flux is something we can easily deal with compared to DT. helion Energy are messing with helium-3 deuterium and a recycling system to recapture side-reaction made helium-3 since that shit is so rare on earth. allegedly, they've made a LOT of progress on a full size prototype.
There's a LOT of irons in the fire and these companies have much less baggage but much less resources than ITER. They may all flame out. I'm not putting money in anyone until more concrete results come out.
