Look up research using the Think/No Think paradigm. Tl;dr it depends on the current goals of the person, the duration of "not remembering" something, ability to inhibit memory (requires high executive control) and some other shit I can't remember

This is a trick I learned about hypnosis.

The subconscious can't process negative or inverse statements.
>"do not run"
>processes as "do run"

>"don't think about white bear"
>processes as "think about white bear"

You can see the confusion this would cause. IMO our invention of negative statements is probably responsible for a whole host of psychological pathologies where you tell yourself you shouldn't do something, and your mind processes it as "do the thing."
This bit of information is important for hypnosis because if you hypnotize someone and say "don't do the thing" well, you get the idea.

By instructing yourself to not think of a white bear you're focusing on the act of thinking about a white bear. Instead focus on something else, i.e. "Think about a red fish".

Actually polar bear hair is not white.
So if you pictured a polar bear, you succeeded in not thinking about the WHITE bear.
