would it be possible for an intelligent metallic fluid system to disassemble or dissolve a bullet faster than it can collide and impart its momentum onto the core structure and causing damage? like a collection of non newtonian nanomachines that can move at the speed of sound?

like a stream of ebbing machines, or just a material that can retroactively avoid the radiation of mechanical waves by trapping them in the core material as its broken apart and can't impart its momentum further as a single piece. like a microscopic grinding or severing action of some kind that would deteriorate a lethal projectile.

Sci-fi shields often illustrate projectiles splintering and flowing at right angles from the impact, over the surface of the shield. The momentum is redirected, not absorbed.

And your point? Changing the bullets trajectory so it falls apart goes at right angles requires that momentum be transferred to the shield as required by conservation of momentum.

The nanomachines would need an immense source of energy to move at the speed of sound, depending on their size and mass. As they get faster the drag force they experience will increase and require ever greater energy. If they were smaller they would have less space to store energy and less force to apply. A bullet from say, an AK-47 moves at about 700 m/s, or roughly twice the speed of sound, so even if they moved at 340 m/s they would not be able to move faster than a bullet.

Ah, but the speed of sound in solids is much higher than that of air. This means our tiny machines could potentially move faster than a bullet. In fact, it has been calculated that utility fog could potentially sustain a 100 meters per second shear per millimeter of thickness. So if you have a layer >7 mm thick, the top part can move faster than a bullet. Although thermal limitations probably apply. The power density to do this will be rather high, probably on the order of the cartridge that fired the bullet... One could probably let a bullet pass right through, especially if you can detect it beforehand. We don't know how to make tiny machines communicate and coordinate with each other fast enough to do this though. That and we don't have a fucking clue how to build them.

The drag force is also much higher than in air, and the speed of sound is only a factor of how fast a longitudinal wave can travel through it, which does not involve extra matter only the matter that is already there.

Dodging the bullet would be the best option since seeing to coming would depend on the speed of light and the speed of calculation. If there were a thing that's made up of only these nanomachines and had no endoskeleton then it could potentially form holes in itself.

This would tend to damage any machines with parts moving faster than the speed of sound of parts they are made of. I agree and said that. The issue is that with the utility fog concept using current control algorithms information propagates through the fog at 50 m/s. Which is a pretty damn big issue.
