I don't actually see Lain as a girl, either. For the most part Nor is she androgynous. Brilliant character design. The bear suit and hat as a security blanket-like mechanism was also a subtle background theme.
Whole show was great. I was thinking about it earlier. Went back and reread The Nightmare of Fabrication the other day for some reason. Besides the solipsistic stuff, when you look at current events it's clear Lain wasn't fiction.
