My brother is 24 years old and half way through his accounting degree. But on a whim he said he wanted to become an actuary and he's been studying 12 hours per day 6 days per week learning math to make his dream come true.
The problem is that he doesn't have any background in math whatsoever. Even his accounting degree so far has consisted of memorising formulas and a piss easy introductory statistics course.
I've told him several times I think realistically it's technically possible that he could become an actuary and learn the math but practically he's better off just being an accountant.
My parents and I are all in agreement that he's not thinking straight and there's no reason to abandon accounting. Last night at the dinner table he told us he'll be studying math "996" meaning 9am to 9pm 6 days per week for the next 6 years before he even starts his actuarial degree.
How the fuck do I pull him out of his delusions? Genuinely concerned about his mental health.
