I respect this. For some reason I can do big picture stuff and work/read proofs okay, but doing the minutia of mathematical work catches me. Its no mystery, I stopped trying in school before algebra started.

A lot of what is done there is memorization:

You didn't really forget how to do it because your professor probably (correctly) just told you to memorize it instead of doing the entire calculation. Don't feel bad for not knowing it if you aren't currently taking calculus/physics courses.
