I'm on my last year of math, pure concentration.
I don't know where this meme that statistics is boring came from, since intro to stats is boring shit, but measure/probability, experiment design, CLT, and the ability for mathematics to actually model certain processes with simple ideas is fascinating. I unironically think most math majors have the idea that statistics is about applying calculators to churn out tests, but stat theory is ridiculously interesting the deeper you go.

I don't know where you've worked, but I've had a friend in stat who did an internship and thought was really interesting, and from what he told me, it didn't sound like it was soul crushing or "brainlet-tier." It sounds like you're going off the impression of industry work in stat rather than what stat may or may not be.

You're doing that thing where you're judging an entire career path based on some impressions or worries/insecurities people have. A good amount of grad students are well funded and don't have to wageslave even while doing a postdoc. The hard part is that people suddenly expect prestige and money to follow specialization rather than writing up a body of work and gets them respect within their subject.

In short, they expect the deal to be like an MD where you study a lot and then make money, when really you're studying a lot...so you can study more as a career, until people see that your work has a lot of deep insight. It's not a bad career, and is incredibly rewarding if that's what you want (fame among the people you work with, especially, students, and lots of high impact papers)

I agree. Fuck ""data science"". Some super smart software eng friends I have hate them to death because they're almost all useless buzzword shitters who know python commands that can spout out pretty graphs but can't actually solve a problem to save their life.

Not him, but I agree. Just using Scikit Learn and Tensorflow without understanding the mathematics behind what you're doing nor having common sense means that you will likely fuck everything up royally. That's why it's better to study statistics, physics, mathematics, econometrics, and other related majors than to major in """data science""" which waters down everything. If you want to git gud, you're better off learning the mathematics and learning the coding in your free time. The code may not be as efficient, but at least you can identify and solve a problem.

Pretty graphs are only meant to give you an idea of what's going on with the data and to please the dipshits in management, not to make accurate predictions which will provide value.

It’s a field of mathematics and has become topics in science and engineering. The world changed a lot since ableson and sussman taught MIT 6.001. There are empirical results and considerations in how we talk about various parts of CS. But the theory, through and through, is all classic mathematics.
When people say it’s not about computers or about science, there’s an extent to which they’re wrong now. It’s as much science or math as you want to get into a specific subfield.
Unfortunately most undergrad programs are pretty watered down to become code academies. I wish they’d have a stronger mathematical basis at more schools and then emphasize topics like systems more rather than multiple software engineering classes. I was lucky that my school was theory focused, and the only software engineering class was optional and not even relevant to the degree. I did a double major in CS and math (pure concentration).

Graphics research groups are cool because they’re part of visualization methods in physics and engineering as well. I never knew how cool graphics was until I saw them do a lot of sigproc shit in research.

I got an internship my junior year. Had a 3.8 gpa. I work for a contractor at the Hanford site. Not related to petroleum. Only 2 years of experience out of college. Same company however. I think I got lucky but I also impressed them enough that I asked for 85k salary and they said yes

I'm convinced that your world ends with the undergrad degree. These are all academically minded degrees that are made for research. Even so, the PhD in these two fields are well prepared for industry. Physics puts you into lots of contact with Monte Carlo simulations, and number theory especially puts you in contact with a lot of code (think sphere packing verification, etc). Either way, physics, math, TCS, philosophy, etc. are all based in research. You have failed to show exactly what "prestige" offers in the face that little to nobody has any inherent reason to care about your work until you care about your work, so you might as well do what you really like and do it well.

I feel like there's this major subtext that research isn't "real work" or that it's fucking around with numbers, papers, and computers. It's all hard work, and most people choose not to appreciate its results since
1) industries are very reluctant to change their current methods unless they're making a loss, and even then, when It comes to technology specifically, they are very reluctant to change. Scientific research is risky by its nature
2) there's personal bias in saying "hurr durr, all that work that's technically involved in theory and grad school is all useless," which isn't really the case; it's the perspective of short sighted profit margins that science doesn't pay immediately, so people take that lack of investment as lack of utility. Just as some academics jerk themselves off to their positions, some engineers jerk themselves off on how "useful" they perceive their work to be as opposed to the next guy. Both of them are wrong

No fucking stem undergrad program at a sufficiently good school is significantly different in inherent difficulty because there's only so much you can ask an undergrad to actually do. Which math is giving you trouble? Math isn't everything in EE, and you can more or less subsist on matching physical phenomena to the mathematics you need to understand. Of course something like a Laplace transform won't make immediate sense, but you can contextualize it in its utility.
You'd better get comfortable with calc 2 integration techniques (parts, various trig substitutions, some basic pattern matching, etc) since it'll be your bread and butter for dealing with Fourier transforms.

Its not the arithmetic part of it, I could solve a stock question in a test without much problems. The problem is how I solve them. I still remember how I drilled myself in calc 4 in which I did fine. However wasnt that I understood what was really being asked but I remembered how the particular question could be solved. It was in line of question X has to be solved using Y, and it has variable of Z.

For the record if you threw a z-transform at me I couldnt solve it for shit. Im not sure how long this type of thinking will take me. I dont feel like I can actually think creatively enough to solve actual hard problems.

ML is just a bunch of linear equations, if you understand algorithmic complexity you can do ML. A math degree isn't useless, but you're more likely to break in with CS using a good portfolio of applied ML undergrad projects.

Tell me if I'm wrong but when looking at LinkedIn and top researchers like 50% have CS with the second largest group is math. I know that CS degrees are often very software-engineering heavy which is what scares me a little as I am not that interested in it. Having said that, the reason why I don't want to study math is because it is badly regarded in my country but I'm considering doing two Bsc. in parallel. One CS and one mathematical statistics. I know a couple people who have studied CS+ econ in parallel but I'm not sure how hard CS and math stats is. It's not a double major or dual degree, it's literally two different bachelor's at different institutions.

Psychology as it is right now is becoming obsolete. The actual profession of being a psychologist is different from a neuroscientist, ones a doctor the other is a scientist. But a degree in neuroscience doesn't make you a neuroscientist nor does a degree in psychology make you a psychologist. Everything lerned in the coursework for psychology is a watered down version of neuroscience with a list of non-reproducible studies tacked on. If someone is trying to become a psychologist I can near guarentee that any graduate program would accept a neuroscience degree holder over a psychology degree every time.

I mean my word choice could have been better though meant degree and not field; was mainly going for the jokes though. Thanks for letting me clarify.

Not in the same way, it could apply to any intellectually demanding field but bio is the largest of them all with the highest number of people who have literally no intention of doing research and who cannot even do highschool mathematics. I graduated ABET certified mechatronics degree with Msc.Eng. in 2nd tier EU country. Now I work as "CAD specialist" aka drafter for Tier 1 supplier since 2 years. My coworkers are all younger than me and hired through nepotism since I live in small town and this is best employer around, so we have rich kids/kids of management or old employees getting the job straight from high-school/welding machine.

I earn ~850€/month, my wife earned minimum salary (~430€/month) after 6 month internship in other firm, contract for 2 years.

My observations:

- study high-tech if your country has a lot of corporations HQ (important) and R&D centers, if it is manufacturing hub then you are fucked

- nice jobs are few and between and usually in Germany & USA, so if you are native citizen of those two countries, you already won life lottery, also because those 2 are main business languages

- knowledge of languages will give you more than degree

- mechanical engineering is very tiring mentally because of workload, schedules, retardation etc. while not giving much salary-wise. It's also pretty easy if you don't have responsibilities that can result in your imprisonment.

- do what others do, stay in big city in rich country with trendy and considered "prestigious" degree like CS or data science and start working early, then you'll have a chance of being well-off

- side effect of it is being childless in your 30s and either being permanently single or living with your high-school gf and never proposing (as seen from people my age)

So here it is. What more truthpills do you want to have? (will post in 0,5-1h from the job)

You're more then welcome to source this.
With that said I don't doubt physicist make as much as computer research guys but there are a limited number of physicist positions while there's a plethora for computer research. The vast majority of physics and math graduates will not work as physicist/mathematicians and they also will not earn high wages relatively speaking.
Also I never said finance makes more than engineers.
Engineers make more than statisticians, who in turn make about the same as finance.

I'm comparing every job available and you're only looking at one specific job title. CS has far more options than computer research which needs a MS while for the physics job you'd need a PhD to be competitive. For CS a BS is enough to get a job but for physics a masters might not even cut it. There aren't many other physics jobs besides the one you listed and tons of physics majors graduate every year who will never go to graduate school.

If my comparison only took wages to consider chemical engineering would be highly rated above mechanical engineering and computer science but as there are hardly any jobs for that I instead commented on that.
Hell mechanical engineers make less money than EE's and CS but their jobs are so stable its arguably a better major. Its not just about pay, but also about job stability, accessibility, and number of opportunities.

The point is the average pay is about the same while engineers require less education and have more job opportunities. Not just that but an engineering would start their career two years earlier than a statistician and in that time accumulate more wealth.

But you are right that overtime is more common for engineers so you could argue the stats guys have comfier less stressful jobs.
