Not actual mathematician here, but my uni is starting to offer several work-study programs doing ML applications for math grad students. Most people we end up working alongside come from a CS background or EE (signal processing) but this could be due to the academic setting; can't really speak for industry jobs.

If you have actual mathematical backgrounds go do something valuable like actuarial work.
Data science is a way, way, way too hyped bubble. The more you people flock to it the more devalued all our jobs will become until corporate overlords finally realize they're not getting magical "data" solutions to fundamental business problems like customer attrition or keeping sales numbers up.
I wish I could be in your position and still have the option to go into a real profession.
Don't voluntarily do this to yourself. There's enough of a chance you'll be like me and have your real job reclassified into a meme DS job through no choosing of your own anyway.

I'm still trying to understand the psychology of why 4chan automatically hates all good-paying jobs, saying they're about to implode, while instead pushing highly saturated jobs with bad pay and no hope of career advancement. I think maybe it has something to do with the psychology of being a beta, where you subconsciously avoid opportunities. Betas assume anything that's good is actually a trap, because nothing good ever happens to them. I originally followed /sci/'s meme advice and studied a STEM subject, but all it qualified me for were shit-tier jobs. Now I do data science and I couldn't be happier about my new job. Also I make a fuckton of money.
