The chip actually isnt so insignificant, since it needs to process all the information from the electrodes, pass it on to the antenna and all the while be very small and biofriendly and low power consumption. Actually getting enough electrodes attached to the chip is what I understand the limiting factor to be right now with bandwidth.

The electrodes are in between the neurons and just tap into the electric field fluctuations caused by the action potentials of multiple neurons nearby. Theyre even talking about being able to distinguish different neurons with one electrode by how far away they are from it and possibly also characteristic signals.

Like on the order of the size of the neurons themselves tiny. Pulling them out isnt going to have any measurable effect on the brain as a whole, and even if a few cells die on the way, that happens all the time and the rest of the brain just adapts.
