The electrons are moving a couple of centimeters per hour, but the current itself is instantaneous because the electrons are pushing forward like a queue. Imagine you have a tube filled with balls and you push a ball in on one end; a ball is going to come out of the other end instantly, even though each individual ball only moved slightly.

That's only the net movement of charge, each individual one is fooken fast but there's any going in each direction so they also cancel out to make a slow net movement
