Did anyone else realize they might simply be too dumb to become smart or knowledgeable in an area? I feel embarrassed to be so stupid I'm simply a brainlet I may as well become a plumber.

Learning math is very discouraging when you balance too much of your self-worth and esteem over it. I think it's a mistake to do so, but I see it everywhere. The problem tends to be that people are too impatient to move at a pace that is actually suited to their abilities. So they push themselves through material too fast and end up understanding very little, which is unsatisfying and demoralizing. Simply put, you can't push yourself to be any smarter than you are, but you can push yourself to be more patient and more disciplined. In my opinion, those two things are much more gratifying than excelling by way of any natural talent.

If the problem is that you aren't retaining/digesting information, then review it until it sticks. Deliberate on the most basic of the basics -- and forgive yourself for all of your inevitable fuck-ups -- until you understand it and remember it, or until you decide you're not being fulfilled and move on to something else. But no one other than you can say if you should be doing it.

Also, plumbing isn't exactly a brainlet-tier vocation.

Fuck plumbers. I hope there is a "every can learn to code!!!" style influx of people wanting to be plumbers and every plumber spends the rest of their days dirt broke.

take your time, focus on being able to state everything you learn in a way you understand like being able to draw a picture of it or say it in just a few words. experiment yourself when something seems off or weird to you. try your best not to look at the answer when you're stuck, and if you do have to look, only look at the very next step and do your best to work from there. if you watch how someone does something, follow them and do it yourself either during or right after. write things down because for some of us learning math is very tactile so writing with our hands gets it in our heads

I failed every math class I took in middle school and high school because I didn't give a shit. I took Algebra three times. I couldn't do FOIL or add fractions until my sophomore year of college. Once I took trig a year ago all of the sudden everything clicked now I'm pulling A's and B's in my calculus sequence classes. Everything clicked because I started at the basics and relearned everything from the ground up. I also convinced myself to love math and now I can say I do. My calc 1 teacher told me to try to enjoy math, it's the only way to truly get better if you naturally suck at it. That's my advice I guess.

You arent supposed to just read about math concepts, and then somehow magically internalize those concepts
Math literature just exists for sanity checks, you are supposed to imagine the math concept from your end, apply your logic to it, and see if the results in your logic line up with what the text is describing
no, this method isn’t random guessing because, when you compare your results to the math text, you will find some parts that seem to match, and others that are off the mark
you use this criticism to evolve your internal concept of the material, and, ideally, fully understand it this way
