My great grandpa was in a bomber crew during ww2, his plane was shot down and he was the only person to live from the crash

Everybody in my family that wasn't married in, is afraid of heights and refuse to fly anywhere for trips.

Is this phobia of Heights genetically passed down from my great grandpa? Can DNA work that fast?
