The males are driven away at this age precisely because they are smaller than the matriach. The reason is that when male elephants are prepared for mating in their season, glands near their eyes secrete a substance which leaks down their face stinging their eyes and enraging them.
They then storm around angrily raping any nearby elephants. As you say, unsuitable behaviour within a creche.
These brokenhearted adolescent males then wander the wasteland alone. Often weaker adolescent males will join an older alpha male. This has the advantage of suppressing their own glands from secreting said stingy goo.
The disadvantage is that the alpha still suffers the full force of elephant sexuality and ends up raping the young adolescent males when no females are available.
