Where does the mass of a black hole come from?
Like suppose I throw a 10g pebble into a black hole. Does the black hole gain 10g of mass? Why? Most of the mass of the pebble comes from strong-force reactions in its nuclei. If the black hole gains the 10g, doesn't it imply that the structure of matter is basically preserved across the event horizon?
