my naiive explanation for why this is the case is that spanish colonists followed the conquistador model: a band of like 100-300 spanish dudes, and only dudes, no chicas, would arrive in south or central america and use their superior technology/domesticated animals to shoot and overrun the noob native americans who were basically spearchuckers at the time (no offense, it's just true). so there were like 100-300 super powerful spanish dudes with no spanish women around, with enough power to have whichever native american female they wanted.
i mean, come on. how many hispanics are named "Gonzalez" or "Martinez" or "Ramirez"? tons and tons. and it's not because there were lots of conquistador colonialists with those same names. it's because the three or four original dudes who took over the entire continent thanks to guns and horses had like 15 wives each. seriously.
i mean, wouldn't you? if you were like Cortez's 12th in command, who ruled with an iron fist over like an entire village of north american hotties, with absolutely no oversight or judicial system?
