did you even apply? Half the battle is applying.
Im in a PhD program directly after undergrad, but i had failed out of uni previously and had to send three undergrad transcripts. That's a huge automatic red flag but still got accepted to a great program.

as someone in a PhD program, dont worry, no he wont. He'll be extremely lucky to land a position directly out of grad school (without post-doc experience too) that pays more than 80-100k a year.

The unemployment rate amongst academics should´t be marginalized. I worked 2 years in HR for junior scientist. Only 7% of all make an academic career and actually becoming professors. Al lot of them enter the free market later and work for way less money.
