Why is it that some things require actively committing them to memory, whereas others can be memorized more or less by accident? For example, I know the average number of structural fires the FDNY responded to each day in 2013 after looking it up once, but can't remember a phone number I use twice a week.

I suspect it's for the same reason you can't force yourself to love someone. If you had felt, at the moment you encountered the datum to be memorised, that that datum is exiting or might turn out to be useful, you would have been more likely to remember it.

Some things require more mental exertion due to higher complexity, or lack of underlying support in existing neural pathways.

If you already know a bunch of biology, remembering that antibiotics works on bacteria is guaranteed. If you know nothing about it, it has nothing to hook on, and may slips by, unless you give it a boost with mental exertion.

As for numbers, today it took my third try to succeed with my bank pin. When you read that fire trivia, you got a sprinkle of awe that doused your brain, hooking that memory. When using that phone number, you're in a boring state of automacy, you're using the back of your brain for those monotonous things not worth remembering.

The human brain is generally not good at memorizing abstractions such as numbers. You can memorize a phone number very well by using other associations with it, such is the case with the method of loci etc.

I do find myself memorizing a phone number very well after a few active uses of it, but always its like a segmented melody, like the full number splits into three or two sets with a distinct tone to how I pronounced them in my head. Same with passwords.

Think about the OTHER references associated with the memory, what comes to mind, what makes you recall it etc. Its never just the thing in question, but the other points of reference and association. Also in that case, the number has a clear cut temporal and local sense and object of reference to it.

Though this is a pretty much phenomenological take on my part.

Even numbers are for some reaosn different, I score extremely high on verbal memory, my working verbal completely outside the norm it seems, and I can remember pages verbatim without extreme effort but I also cannot remember phone numbers and my working numeral memory is 8 which is completely average.

Are you an arsonist per-chance?
I can't member the last time I've had to manually dial a phone regularly.

I was watching a show called Rescue Me, which is about a NYC fireman. Every episode had the main characters responding to a call, and I wanted to know how realistic the idea that they'd get a call every week was.

Going back to the thread topic, my reason for bringing up the phone number is that repetition is supposed to improve recall, but in this case it didn't. Why not? Other numbers I've used a lot are easy to remember, so why did repetition work in one instance but not the other?

Perhaps it's because the fireman response number sprouted from your curiosity, involving active work you did to discover it after some emotional involvement with the show you were watching.
The phone number you type is a mechanical action, with little to no mental involvement from your part.

The mind is not the exclusive use of something we can recall is using memory. We are not using a memory of ourselves to create ourselves over and over and then we can't use that to make more interesting things appeal to what we want is ourselves using memory then either, naturally there are those that can see that way and we aren't going to introduce that to a populace that won't see a useful person of their mind using that as something that can regard we may not need to use a certain kind of style in writing and other things, that may remove some people for being able to remove information in and out of use, like pretending that pretending there is a typewriter instead of a computer might make computers more easy rather than hard, we are not going to make it difficult to actually use something we cannot use well already, and that may mean that memory is not something we can control and we initially just tell ourselves something change and we recall the change and not the what to it without fighting ourselves on that, we do not declare the use of information as something that mind is in use of memory for. So like we can't actually use memory information without using all information in it, this would be like printing up a data sector sheet and declaring that sheet a topic, and using that to make more sense, but in easier uses of information we may just be making more sense when we finish a whole topic and that whole topic is sometimes aligned with other things we do in real life. We don't necessarily need to agree we are not just going to be able to remember, we need to see that we have a thing inside, and something outside like a set of vertices, where inside we may have like a coordinate point, we don't need to place words in space to some extent, unless we use kerning to create the example, but then we don't have the useful information available if we don't actually arrive at real...like...

It may just be the times and there are a lot of people using words and or meanings we do not disagree with, but we disagree with them and we are being told they know that we disagree. This is not a dangerous time. It is a time of stupid people, then, and that is a dangerous thing to note to them. They are stupid people and that makes it dangerous to note they are stupid people. In case it is hard to remember with all that detail and fluff and what not.
