What is the mathematical significance of the mean average deviation(MAD)? I don't fully understand, but I think MAD is supposed to have a mathematical significance, and standard deviation is supposed to be an easier approximation of MAD. Is this true?

I tried google and wikipedia but I can't find a clear answer.
