It ignores circadian rhythms which are baked into our physiology to encourage deep sleep. It's possible you could do this for a while but your sleep quality would suffer in the long run most likely. I can see how this would be possible for some people who might not feel the effects of the circadian rhythm as strongly, but for the vast majority of the population it wouldn't work very well.

Humans are the only animals who currently have monophasic sleep cycles. We know from ancient texts that people used to have biphasic sleep; sleeping in the evening, waking for about 2 hours, then continuing sleep in the early morning. Humans only switched to monophasic sleep with the advent of electric lighting.
