Why? University is a scam. You can learn all the same material by self-teaching more quickly, more thoroughly, and much more cheaply. University is not about learning and understanding, it is just about memorizing facts to pass tests and giving money to some rich people in return for a degree.

If you study on your own, how do you prove to an employer that you know what you know?
Employers want some way to identify qualified candidates.

Don't think of university as a place to learn.
It is primarily a vetting process where you try to distinguish yourself from the riffraff.

It's a work credential you retard. Most decent salaried white collar jobs explicitly require a bachelor's degree at a minimum before you'll even be considered as a candidate.
Is it a "scam?" Absolutely. In the same sense it was a "scam" back when mobsters would take exorbitant amounts of money from all the local store owners in their neighborhood and call it "protection," as in you pay them to be protected from what happens when you don't pay them.
In both cases you're not dumb for going along with it. Just because you know it's morally wrong doesn't mean you'll have a better outcome by trying to opt out of the system.

Anon you stupid zoomer, if you ever had a job you'd see firsthand the applications that don't have a bachelor's degree get trashed with no interview.
Any halfway decent business is going to attract way too many job applications for HR to not have simple mindless True/False filters like "does he have a bachelor's degree?" You need to throw out as many applications as possible so you can reasonably manage the work required to process the remaining few more seriously.
