What I did was just to send an email stating that I found his research interesting (no need to be too specific all I did was brush over a few of his more popular abstracts) and that you are looking for an undergraduate research position. "If you have the room I'd love to be a part of your group"
If you haven't taken a class then it's probably best to just email them stating your major and year and say you find their research interesting and was wondering if they'd be willing to discuss possibly joining their group as an undergraduate researcher
Trust me they are constantly having student both undergraduate and graduate students asking them questions. You're not gonna annoy them.
